- WD1002A-FOX
-
- User Guide
-
- The Western Digital WD1002A-FOX diskette/floppytape controller is
- compatible with an IBM Personal Computer XT or IBM Personal Computer
- AT and will support up to four drives. The optional BIOS ROM allows
- XT and XT compatible systems to support 720KB, 1.2 or 1.44 megabyte
- diskette drives.
-
- The WD1002A-FOX is equipped with data connectors and power connector
- for up to two external floppy drives. However, the controller will
- not support high density (1.2 or 1.44 megabyte) floppy drives
- externally. If you connect four drives to the controller, the 360
- and/or 720KB drives should be connected externally with the 1.2
- and/or 1.44 megabyte drives connected internally.
-
- Further, if you are using the WD1002A-FOX as a floppy controller in
- an IBM AT or compatible system, you must also have a hard disk drive
- or hard disk drive controller in the system.
-
- Four versions of the WD1002A-FOX are available:
-
- Feature 001 (F001): Supports two drives internally and
- has no BIOS.
-
- Feature 002 (F002): Supports four drives (two internally
- and two externally) and has no BIOS.
-
- Feature 003 (F003): Supports two drives internally and
- has the BIOS ROM.
-
- Feature 004 (F004): Supports four drives (two internally
- and two externally) and has the BIOS.
-
-
- Installation of the controller requires three steps: 1) verifying
- that the system BIOS supports the drive type; 2) verifying jumper
- settings; 3) installing into the host computer. To complete
- installation, you will need the following:
-
- A floppy disk cable (daisychain type if installing two internal
- drives); external floppy drive cable (if installing drives
- externally); screwdriver; MSDOS Version 3.3 or later; Driver.Sys (or
- other appropriate device drivers) if installing drives externally.

- Preparation of Controller
-
- WARNING
- HANDLE THE CONTROLLER BY THE ENDS OF THE BOARD
- SOME OF THE CHIPS ARE STATIC SENSITIVE AND DAMAGE
- MAY OCCUR IF THE BOARD IS INCORRECTLY HANDLED
-
- Before you can install your WD1002A-FOX, you will need to be certain
- that the jumpers (small shorting plugs) are correctly set. Refer to
- Table 1 for correct jumper settings. Modification of factory jumper
- settings is rarely necessary. Modify jumpers only under the
- direction of a qualified individual; i.e. your dealer.
-
- You must also verify that your system BIOS will support the drive
- type(s) you have chosen. If the system BIOS does not support your
- drive type(s), you will need to use F003 or F004 with the FOX BIOS.
- If installing in an AT type system, run SET UP program (or
- equivalent) when installing.
-
- It is recommended that you use DOS 3.3 or later. Older versions of
- DOS will work with 360KB drives; DOS 3.1 will work with 1.2 Megabyte
- drives; DOS 3.2 with 720KB drives; DOS 3.3 with 1.44 Megabyte
- drives.
-
- NOTE: There are several types of 1.44 Megabyte drives available.
- The WD1002A-FOX will only support "intelligent" 1.44 Megabyte
- drives. These drives determine the drive type and data rate from the
- drive's own media and not from the controller connection. Another
- term used for "intelligent" drive is "density select by media".
- Refer to your drive documentation to determine if you have a 1.44
- Megabyte "intelligent" drive.

- Hardware Installation
-
- WARNING
- MAKE SURE COMPUTER IS TURNED OFF
- AND POWER IS DISCONNECTED
-
- 1. Installation of a 135 watt or greater power supply may be
- necessary if you plan to install external disk drives without an
- external power supply. Contact your dealer for further information.
-
- 2. Remove the blank expansion slot bracket. Put the bracket away
- and save it for possible future use. The screw will be used to hold
- the new controller in place.
-
- 3. Verify that the floppy disk drives are properly installed. Refer
- to your drive manuals to determine correct placement of drive select
- jumpers and drive terminator installation.
-
- 4. If the drive(s) is (are) installed internally, it is best to
- locate the FOX controller board in the closest available expansion
- slot to the internal drive. However, expansion slot J8 in the IBM
- Personal Computer XT should not be used because of the slot's
- modified select and timing characteristics.

-
-
- 5. Attach 34-pin control connector to J1 on the controller board.
- Make sure that Pin 1 of the cable connector goes to Pin 1 on the
- controller board. Pin 1 of the cable connector is typically located
- on the color coded side of the cable.
-
- 6. For external diskette drives or floppytape drives, connect the
- 37-pin connector to J2 on the F002 or F004 controller boards. Make
- sure that pin 1 on the cable is connected to pin 1 on the controller
- board.
-
- 7. Connect the system's 4-pin power connector to J3. Make sure
- that pin 1 on the cable connector is connected to pin 1 of the power
- connector.
-
- 8. Install the controller board into the expansion slot. Make sure
- the board is seated properly by pressing down on both ends of the
- board. Secure the board with the bracket screw.
-
- CAUTION
- WHEN ROUTING CABLES, BE CAREFUL NOT TO PINCH
- THEM. CABLES MUST NOT GET CAUGHT BETWEEN THE
- COVER AND THE BOARDS, NOR SHOULD THEY OBSTRUCT
- ANY AIR FLOW PATH FROM FANS OR VENTS.
